EBBM Turns 10! – Gallery

July 14, 2015 | See UJIA

Ten years of the UJIA Ethiopian Bar/Bat Mitzvah Twinning Programme was celebrated with a reunion event at St John’s Wood Synagogue on Sunday. Nearly 100 former participants and family members took part in a range of Ethiopian inspired activities, including drumming, basket weaving and Ethiopian dancing. Guests also heard from 18 year-old Silanet Mekonan, who made aliyah to Israel from Ethiopia in 2006, when she was nine.
Silanet spoke of the long process of fulfilling her family’s dream of moving to Israel and the role of the twinning programme in her integration into Israel, saying, “I know that if it wasn’t for this project, I would not have had a Bat Mizvah because my parents did not have the time to deal with this, and I know that I would feel I was missing a very important experience.”
